นกกระทา หรือ นกคุ่ม เป็นชื่อสามัญของนกในอันดับไก่ หลายชนิด นกกระทา โดยมากจะเป็นไก่ขนาดเล็ก ตัวป้อมสั้นอ้วน สีสันไม่สวยงาม ตามลำตัวมักมีลายเป็นจุดกระ ๆ ปีกและหางสั้น ทำให้บินได้เฉพาะระยะใกล้ ๆ เหมือนไก่ จึงมักหากินเมล็ดพืชและแมลงอยู่ตามพื้นดิน
